Michelin Star Chefs

Gaining Michelin stars takes time, effort and dedication and is one of the highest accolades in the hospitality industry. Although it is the restaurant that is awarded the stars rather than the chef, it is easy for a restaurant to lose them if the master in question leaves the establishment.

Yet the chef always retains public recognition for gaining the stars, even after he has moved on. Most of the top rated Michelin gurus receive the stars by opening and running their own restaurants, hence attracting higher status. Many of these go on to become celebrities in their own right, helped by hard work and perseverance to be the best.

Although France is known as the gastronomy centre of the world, Britain has its fair share of Michelin chefs. One star is considered an honour, any more than that is a heaven sent gift and in 2010 the UK had the most recorded starred restaurants in its history, with 140 featuring and four receiving the coveted three stars.

Heston Blumenthal of the Fat Duck received his third star in 2004 and is now a well known face on TV. The restaurant has received such accolades as the best restaurant in the world and is known for its quirky take on themes. Also in Bray near Maidenhead is the Waterside Inn, its three stars won by the renowned Michel Roux. It has held its three star status since 1985 and is known the world over for its top class culinary experience.

The remaining three star restaurants are in London and are held by Alain Ducasse at the Dorchester, the newest appointed three stars in the UK; and the Gordon Ramsey, whose stars were gained by Gordon Ramsey and maintained by Clare Smyth, the only female chef in Britain to head up a three starred restaurant.

Celebrity chefs don`t necessarily all hold Michelin status but for many the accolade of receiving the award helps propel them into the public forefront and build their reputations further. Jamie Oliver is an example of a chef who does own a Michelin starred restaurant but is one of the most popular celebrity chefs, who has influenced the government and the public alike.

One of the first TV chefs, Delia Smith, is still going strong and maintains her celebrity status with pride.Still appearing regularly on screens across Britain, the only thing that has changed is the caffe equipment she now uses in her kitchen - no longer an old fashioned whisk but the latest gadgets are loved by all - Michelin starred and celebrity alike.
